We are living through tumultuous times. A global pandemic has thrown our world upside down, and we face daunting challenges. People’s lives and livelihoods are hanging in the balance. The foundation of our community is our schools and it is during times like these where we need strong leadership at our school district.

That’s why the Clark County Education Association is launching our new Strategic Horizon PAC. In a state that has systematically underfunded education for decades, this new economic crisis will only compound things further. Our students represent our next generation, and we must safeguard them and prepare them for an increasingly uncertain world.

Our education system is struggling under COVID-19. Our schools are essential, and through distance learning is the current direction we are in our students can’t afford a compromised education. But schools are also a microcosm. With thousands of students, educators, and support staff from across our communities convening daily in close quarters, schools have the potential to be major vectors for the spread of the virus. We need a careful and intentional process in place for reducing that spread before we can safely re-open and have students and educators physically return to the classroom.

It’s clearer to us than ever that to succeed in these unprecedented times we must have steady, competent leadership. With that clearly in mind, Strategic Horizons is laser focused on the elections this November that matter most to that success: the school board.

The Clark County Board of Trustees has been faced with impossible dilemmas for as long as anyone can remember. Hard decisions have had to be made while keeping our students’ best interests in mind. Unfortunately, for far too long, we’ve had Trustees in place who lose sight of that, and as a result, our students suffer. Fortunately, this November, we have a chance to change that. Four out of seven seats on the board are up for re-election, and we need to make sure the right people are in place moving forward.
